At Driftwood Dawn Coffee Company, we believe that great coffee is part science, part ritual. Whether you’re brewing a bold French press, a clean pour-over,  or a typical drip, getting the right ratio of coffee to water is key. This guide will walk you through the most popular brewing methods and the ideal ratios to help you get the best flavor out of every bag.

What is the Golden Ratio in Coffee?

The “Golden Ratio” refers to the ideal balance of coffee to water for a well-extracted cup. It’s typically 1 gram of coffee for every 15 to 18 grams of water – written as 1:15–1:18. This range gives you a flavorful, balanced brew without being too weak or too bitter. You can tweak it based on your taste preference and brew method, but starting here is a reliable way to make consistently great coffee.

If you’d rather measure in ounces, aim for 1 ounce of coffee for every 15 ounces of water – written as 1:15. Adjust as needed to suit your taste.

Or, if you prefer using the good ol’ coffee scoop, use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every cup (8 ounces) of water. As always, adjust to find your perfect cup.

Brewing Methods at a Glance

There’s no one right way to brew coffee – just the right way for you. Each method brings out different notes, body, and character from the same beans. Whether you prefer the boldness of a French press, the clarity of a pour-over, or the convenience of a drip machine, your brew method shapes your experience.

Some highlight precision (like the V60), others embrace richness (like the Moka Pot), and a few are perfect for slow-sipping (hello, cold brew). The method you choose can match your mood, your schedule, or your taste preferences.
