Whiskey Barrel Aged Guatemalan Review

At 7:45 AM, I opened the bag, and it felt like stepping into an orchard at dawn. The aroma wasn’t overpowering, but it carried a quiet sweetness – a subtle scent of apples and pears drifting through the cool morning air. I couldn’t stop smelling it for a while; it just had this calm, inviting presence, exactly what you’d hope for in a good medium roast.

I brewed it with my Chemex using a 1:18 ratio. The coffee itself looked pretty standard, nothing that stood out visually. But the taste told a richer story. It was smooth, medium-bodied, with a pleasing citrus note – not sour or sharp, just bright enough to wake up my senses. And there was no lingering aftertaste like you sometimes get with bolder or darker brews. It finished clean, which I really appreciated.

I’ll be honest – with a name like Whiskey Barrel Aged, I expected a stronger whiskey flavor or warmth, but I didn’t really find any of that. That was a bit disappointing at first. Instead, it seems like the barrel aging brought out the coffee’s natural fruit and citrus notes more than adding any actual whiskey taste. For some, that might feel underwhelming if you’re buying it for the whiskey profile.

After a few more brews, though, I’ve found it to be an excellent mid-afternoon sip, especially while writing, studying, or grinding out some quiet work. It’s not a brew I’d choose for a bold morning wake-up, but when I want something smooth, light, and gently flavorful, it’s perfect.

One thing to note – if you’re someone who likes to add creamer, milk, or sugar to your coffee, I wouldn’t recommend it with this roast. The citrus notes are delicate and would probably get overpowered or clash with added flavors. This is a cup best enjoyed black, letting its natural story shine through.

Every cup tells a story, and this one reminds me that sometimes it’s the quiet, subtle notes that begin the conversation.
